I'm behind on my taxes and want to get up-to-date. Should I contact the IRS and inform them that I'm planning to file?

Do NOT contact the IRS preemptively. In the rare event that they contact you, let them know that you are working with us to come into full compliance. Our usual filing turnaround is generally far faster than any deadline they may impose on you in any case.

The best way to first make contact is to file a completed tax return.
