The Documents section contains all the files that you and your tax preparer have uploaded. Files uploaded by your tax preparer may include documents accompanying your return and receipts showing that the IRS has received your return.
Documents you provide us
In the Documents section of your TFX account, you can upload, rename, and download your documents and keep them always at hand. Uploaded files are categorized by tax year, and for each year, you will find the total size of all the files.
To manage your documents for a specific year, click on the corresponding year link. You will be able to see the date when each file was added and the number of pages the PDF file contains.
Upload documents
To upload documents to the TFX system:
Navigate to Documents > Documents You Provide Us.
Drag and drop selected files into the dedicated upload area or click the Select local files for upload button.
Once you have selected the file(s) you wish to upload, add extra information about the files in the Uploading new documents pop-up window:
Year: choose the tax year for which you are uploading the file.
Tax form: specify what kind of tax form you are uploading.
Click Submit.
❗ Important notes:
The maximum upload file size allowed is 100 MB. Refer to File size limitations for more information.
If you upload password-protected PDF files, our system will prompt you to enter the correct password. This ensures that authorized tax preparers can access your sensitive information. Your documents are secured when uploaded to your file cabinet. Your security and peace of mind are our top priorities.
If you upload other types of password-protected files, our system will accept them without requiring a password. Please email the correct password to your tax preparer.

To speed up the uploading process, you can upload ZIP files containing multiple documents. Refer to Uploading ZIP files with multiple documents to learn how our system unzips such files.
How to handle files that already exist in your file cabinet
As you cannot have multiple files with the same name in the same year folder, the system will warn you that you are attempting to upload a file that already exists in your file cabinet.
You have two options:
Replace the file: Click Replace, select another tax year and a directory (if any), and click Submit.
Delete the file: Click the bin 🗑 icon if you decide not to proceed.
Create directories
You can create directories inside tax year folders by following these steps:
Navigate to Documents > Documents You Provide Us.
Click the new directory 📁 icon next to the year folder.
Type the directory name and click Save folder.
Move documents
You can move files to other directories or change the year of a file by following these steps:
Navigate to Documents > Documents You Provide Us.
Select the check boxes next to the names of the files you wish to move.
Click the Move to link at the top of the file list.
Select a tax year and/or a new directory,
Repeat for the other selected files, then click Move.
Rename documents
You can change the name of a file by following these steps:
Navigate to Documents > Documents You Provide Us.
Select the check boxes next to the names of the files you wish to rename.
Click Move to at the top of the file list.
Click the pencil 🖊 icon next to the file name, change it, and then click the floppy disk 💾 icon.
Repeat for the other selected files, then click Move.
Preview documents
To preview your tax documents using the built-in document viewer:
Navigate to Documents > Documents You Provide Us.
Select the tax year > the directory, and click on the document’s name or the eye 👁 icon.
Download documents
To download documents you have uploaded to the TFX system, you can take one of the following actions:
To download a single file, click the download icon, choose the folder on your computer where you want to save the file, and click Save.
To download multiple files, select the checkboxes next to the file names and click Download at the top of the list. The selected files will be automatically placed into a ZIP archive.
To download all documents you have uploaded to the TFX system, click Select All > Download at the top of the list. All files will be automatically placed into a ZIP archive.
Delete documents/directories
To delete a single file, multiple files, or whole directories at once, follow the following steps:
Navigate to Documents > Documents You Provide Us.
Select the check boxes next to the names of the files you wish to delete, and click Delete.
Confirm by clicking Remove.
❗ Important note: once you have submitted the TQs for a tax preparer review, your file cabinet will be locked. Click request unlock if you need to manage files. For more information, refer to How to unlock your file cabinet with documents & TQs.
Documents TFX prepared: Tax returns, instructions & confirmations
In your TFX account, you have the ability to preview, download, and print all of your tax documents prepared by TFX, regardless of the year they were created. To access these documents, simply navigate to the Documents section. If there are any new documents available, the number of files will be displayed next to the section.
There are two folders in this section:
Tax Returns folder
All tax documents are placed into the Tax Returns folder, categorized by tax year. Each year will show the number of unread files. To manage your files for a specific year, click the corresponding year link. You will see the document type, filing method, and any tax due (if applicable).
Preview documents
To preview your tax documents using the built-in document viewer:
Navigate to Documents > Documents TFX Prepared.
Click on the Tax Returns folder.
Select the tax year and click on the document’s name or the eye 👁 icon.
❗ Important note: you may see In Review next to the tax documents prepared by TFX. It means that files have been prepared and uploaded to your file cabinet but cannot be downloaded because they have not yet passed our internal review by at least two CPA/EA.
Download documents
To download a tax return to your computer, follow the steps described above.
Print documents
Most tax returns are submitted to the IRS via electronic submission (e-file). We e-file whenever possible. However, in specific scenarios where e-filing is not possible, you will need to mail a paper copy of your return to the IRS.
To print your tax return:
Download a file or multiple files from the Documents TFX Prepared section.
Locate the PDF file on your computer and open it with Adobe Acrobat Reader or Chrome browser.
Click File > Print. Alternatively, you can press CTRL+P or click the printer icon to print.
Adjust the print settings: specify the number of copies, the color mode, etc.
Note: both U.S. letter size and European A4 size are acceptable for printing.
Click Print.
