Streamlined Filing Procedures - IRS amnesty program
The Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures is an IRS amnesty program, designed to assist American expatriates who have unintentionally failed to file their U.S. taxes for multiple years in catching up, without facing any penalties for late filing. The program allows taxpayers to file their most recent three years of Federal tax returns, along with their last six Foreign Bank Account Reports (FBARs) with no penalties. TFX has helped thousands of U.S. citizens get compliant, penalty-free.
Turnaround time:
Approximately 1 month.
For more information, please refer to Streamlined Program - Which years to file?
Tax projection
Major life changes, such as moving abroad, receiving a promotion, retiring, or selling property, often bring significant shifts in income and, with them, substantial changes to your U.S. tax obligations. The IRS requires that you make estimated tax payments in the same year your income increases, even though your actual return won’t be filed until the following year. This is where our Tax projection service — a future-year tax calculation — can help you stay ahead.
The main goal of this service is to help you prepare for your upcoming tax obligations by explaining how any changes in life circumstances may affect your taxes in the future, so that you are not caught off guard by an unexpectedly high tax bill or IRS penalties.
When to consider a tax projection:
You may benefit from this service if you anticipate one of the following events:
Significant increase in wages
Extended stay in the U.S.
Change in filing status (e.g., single ↔ married)
Retirement or withdrawal from a pension fund
Starting a business
Sale of real estate
Capital gains from selling stocks
Receiving severance pay
Relocating to another country
Turnaround time:
Approximately 15 business days.
What you will receive:

Draft tax return (Form 1040 or 1040NR):
We’ll prepare a draft IRS Form 1040 (U.S. residents) or Form 1040NR (non-residents) based on your projected income, deductions, and credits.
Benefit: See a clear snapshot of your potential tax liability before filing, helping you plan ahead with confidence.
IRS estimated tax vouchers & underpayment penalty avoidance:
Receive pre-filled IRS vouchers (Form 1040-ES) with calculated payment deadlines to keep you on track.
Benefit: Avoid underpayment penalties by making timely, accurate estimated tax payments.
Cross-border tax analysis:
Detailed review of how U.S. and foreign income, deductions, and tax treaties impact your U.S. tax liability.
Benefit: Minimize surprises at tax time by understanding international tax implications upfront.
Notes:
This is a quantitative service focused on calculations. If you are looking for strategic advice on how to minimize your projected tax liability, we recommend our separate tax planning consultation — a phone session tailored to tax-saving strategies.
The option to complete future year questionnaires is not immediately available in your TFX account to prevent any ambiguity. Please fill out a ''dummy'' Tax Questionnaire for 2005 with your projected income information.
For more information, please refer to Tax projection.
Prior return review
If your tax returns were prepared by someone other than TFX, they may contain errors, potentially leading to missed deductions, overpaid taxes, or exposure to IRS audits. Our experts can review your last three years of tax returns and current-year tax returns to ensure accuracy and compliance with IRS regulations.
What’s included in the prior return review:
Personal U.S. tax returns (Form 1040) for U.S. citizens and green card holders
Supporting forms such as 2555 (Foreign Earned Income Exclusion) and 1116 (Foreign Tax Credit)
What’s not included:
Non-resident returns (Form 1040-NR)
Business, trust, or partnership returns
Financial reporting (e.g., FBAR, Form 8938)
Purpose of the prior return review:
We aim to identify errors and missed deductions that may work in your favor. If we discover underpayment, we will explain the risks of leaving the return as-is, but we do not report anything to the IRS. The decision to amend is entirely yours.
Pricing:
Each tax return review costs $250, and if an amendment is suggested, this fee can be applied toward the amendment cost. A typical amendment fee for a straightforward federal return starts at $175, with costs varying based on complexity.
Turnaround time:
Approximately 10 business days.
Note on refunds:
Federal and Social Security/FICA refunds are not taxable (except for interest received).
State refunds are generally taxable.
The IRS typically processes amended return refunds within 3–4 months.
For more information, please refer to Check my tax return. If errors are identified during the review process, TFX can assist in filing amendments through a streamlined approach tailored to your case. Clients whose original returns were prepared by TFX can initiate amendments via the "Previous return issue report" tool in their TFX account.
IRS letter review
TFX offers this service for those who have received a letter or notice from the IRS. We will review the letter, analyze your state of affairs, and explain in plain English how to dispute the IRS's position. Our findings will be presented to you, along with a recommended course of action to ensure that you receive fair treatment.
Pricing:
If an amendment is suggested, the review cost of $250 goes toward the amendment fee. Similarly, if IRS representation is necessary, the review cost will go towards the hourly fee, should you choose TFX to represent you.
For more information, please refer to IRS correspondence - How we can help.

Expatriation services
Expatriating from the U.S. tax system, whether by renouncing U.S. citizenship or relinquishing a green card, is a complex process, especially if your net worth exceeds $2 million or you have had significant U.S. tax liabilities. In such cases, the IRS may classify you as a "covered expatriate", which can trigger a substantial exit tax. Even if your net worth is below $2 million, failing to file tax returns for the five years prior to your expatriation year can still result in being classified as a "covered expatriate".
What is required for a compliant expatriation:
To avoid covered expatriate status and its tax consequences, you must:
Hold another citizenship at the time of expatriation.
Be fully compliant with U.S. tax filings and FBARs for the 5 years preceding your expatriation year, and not owe any unpaid taxes from those years.
File a final U.S. tax return for the year of expatriation. For example, if you filed Form I-407 and formally abandoned your green card in 2025, your final return would be filed in 2026.
Submit Form 8854 with your final tax return to officially notify the IRS of your expatriation.
Our process:
We begin by evaluating your citizenship or residency status and confirming whether you are current on U.S. income tax and foreign asset reporting. If you are not compliant, we will recommend the most suitable option to catch up, either through the Streamlined Filing Procedures or Delinquent FBAR Submission Procedures, before preparing your final return.
Once all compliance issues are resolved, we will prepare and file your final tax return and Form 8854 to formally complete your expatriation process and terminate your U.S. tax resident status.
Turnaround time:
Compliant clients: Up to 1 month, depending on complexity.
Non-compliant clients: Up to 4 months.
Pricing:
The minimal total cost for preparing a final dual-status return (Forms 1040 & 1040NR) plus Form 8854 is $1,050.
Service | Fee |
Dual-status return (Forms 1040 + 1040NR) | From $650 (additional fees may apply) |
Form 8854 – Non-covered expatriate | $400 |
Form 8854 – Covered expatriate | Billed hourly at $200/hr (based on foreign asset complexity) |
Notes:
Form 8854 is not required if you held a green card for fewer than 8 of the last 15 tax years.
Unlike citizens relinquishing their U.S. citizenship, green card holders may choose to file a resident return for the full tax year (starting at $450), which may be more beneficial. We will determine the best filing method during the review.
For details about filing requirements and pricing scenarios based on your filing history needs, please refer to Expatriation services.
